The Spare Ball: A Must-Have in Your Bowling Arsenal
Bowling is a sport that combines skill, strategy, and precision. Whether you’re a seasoned bowler or just starting out, having the right equipment can make a significant difference in your game. One essential tool to have in your bowling arsenal is a spare ball. In this article, we will explore what a spare ball is and why it is crucial for every bowler.
Understanding Spare Shots: In bowling, a spare occurs when a bowler knocks down all remaining pins on the second ball of a frame after failing to achieve a strike on the first. Spare shots are essential to maintaining a consistent score and increasing your chances of achieving a higher game. Unlike strikes, which require power and hook potential, spare shots demand accuracy and precision.
What is a Spare Ball? A spare ball, also known as a “plastic ball” or “spare shooting ball,” is a specialized bowling ball designed specifically for picking up spare shots. Unlike traditional reactive resin or urethane balls used for striking, spare balls are made from a plastic or polyester material. They have little to no hook potential, allowing them to travel in a straight line with minimal deviation.
Benefits of a Spare Ball:
-
Consistency: Spare balls offer consistency since they don’t hook as much as reactive balls. This makes it easier to repeat spare shots, reducing the risk of missing easy spares due to excessive hook.
-
Accuracy: Spare balls have a predictable path, allowing bowlers to aim directly at their target without worrying about the ball veering off course. Their straight trajectory helps bowlers improve their accuracy, especially when targeting corner pins or challenging spare combinations.
-
Versatility: Spare balls are versatile and can be used on various lane conditions. Whether you’re playing on a dry lane or a heavily oiled one, spare balls will maintain their straight path, making them a reliable choice regardless of the oil pattern.
-
Mental Advantage: Having a spare ball in your arsenal provides a mental advantage. Knowing that you have a dedicated ball for spare shots boosts confidence and eliminates doubt when faced with challenging spare configurations. This mindset allows bowlers to focus more on executing their shots rather than worrying about missing easy spares.
Conclusion: A spare ball is an essential tool for any bowler serious about improving their game. Its consistent straight trajectory, accuracy, versatility, and mental advantage make it an invaluable asset in a bowler’s arsenal. By investing in a spare ball, bowlers can significantly enhance their spare conversion rates and ultimately improve their overall scores. So, next time you hit the lanes, don’t forget to include a spare ball in your bowling bag!
