UNDERSTAND YOUR BOWLING STYLE
Before choosing the right bowling ball, it’s crucial to understand your bowling style. There are different styles including stroker, tweener, and cranker, each requiring specific characteristics and ball motions.
Â
STROKER STYLE
Strokers have a smooth and controlled approach, with a ball speed that’s neither too slow nor too fast. They typically have a more traditional and straightforward delivery, relying on accuracy and precision. Strokers prefer a ball with a smooth, controllable hook potential to maintain consistency.
Â
TWEENER STYLE
Tweeners fall between strokers and crankers, blending power with finesse. They have a versatile style, able to adapt to changing lane conditions and oil patterns. When choosing a ball, tweeners look for versatility, needing a ball with moderate hook potential and the ability to handle a variety of lane conditions.
Â
CRANKER STYLE
Crankers are known for their high rev rate and strong ball motion. They generate significant power and hook potential, seeking a ball that can handle heavy oil patterns and create an aggressive backend reaction. Crankers typically look for asymmetrical core designs and high-performance coverstocks to maximize their rev rate.
Â
BOWLING BALL ANATOMY AND PERFORMANCE FACTORS
When it comes to choosing the right bowling ball, understanding its anatomy and performance factors can significantly impact your game. Let’s delve into the key components of a bowling ball and how they influence ball motion and overall performance.
Â
COVERSTOCK
The coverstock is the outer shell of the bowling ball. It plays a crucial role in the ball’s performance as it directly impacts its traction on the lane. Coverstocks can vary in material, texture, and porosity, affecting the ball’s ability to grip the lane surface. For instance, a pearl coverstock provides increased length with a sharper backend reaction, while a solid coverstock offers earlier traction and a smoother arcing motion.
Â
WEIGHT BLOCK
The weight block, also known as the core, determines the ball’s internal mass distribution. Different weight block designs can influence the ball’s dynamics, controlling its motion down the lane. Symmetrical weight blocks provide a more even and predictable ball reaction, whereas asymmetrical weight blocks offer increased flare potential and angular backend motion.
Â
TOP WEIGHT
Top weight refers to the imbalance of weight within the bowling ball. It influences the ball’s orientation as it rolls down the lane, affecting its hook potential and overall motion. Understanding the top weight is essential for bowlers looking to match the ball’s characteristics with their specific playing style.
By considering the coverstock, weight block, and top weight, you can make an informed decision when selecting a bowling ball that aligns with your individual style and enhances your overall performance on the lanes.
Â
CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEIGHT AND SIZE
When choosing a bowling ball, the weight and size play a crucial role in your performance. It’s essential to select a ball that aligns with your physical capabilities and bowling style. Here are practical tips to help you determine the correct weight and size for an optimal bowling experience.
Â
CONSIDER YOUR PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES
Before selecting a bowling ball, assess your physical strength and stamina. It’s important to choose a weight that allows you to maintain control and accuracy throughout your game. A ball that is too heavy can lead to fatigue and an increased risk of injury, while a ball that is too light may compromise your ability to generate power and control.
Â
MATCHING THE SIZE TO YOUR HAND
The size of the finger holes should also be considered when choosing a bowling ball. The ball should fit comfortably in your hand, allowing for a secure grip without being too tight or too loose. A properly fitted ball will enhance your ability to release the ball smoothly and consistently, contributing to improved accuracy and overall performance. Visit your local Pro Shop Professional to get your hand fit properly.
Â
TESTING DIFFERENT WEIGHTS
It’s advisable to test several weights to determine the most suitable option. Begin with a lighter weight and gradually move up until you find a ball that feels comfortable and controllable. Experimenting with different weights will give you a better sense of which weight allows for a fluid and natural delivery while maintaining accuracy and power.
Â
SEEKING PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE
If you’re uncertain about the appropriate weight and size for your bowling ball, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from a certified bowling professional or pro shop staff. They can provide valuable insights and recommendations based on your physical capabilities and bowling style, ensuring that you make an informed decision.

Â
CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET AND LONG-TERM GOALS
When choosing the right bowling ball for your style, it’s crucial to consider your budget and long-term goals. Understanding the balance between investment and potential performance impact is key to making a well-informed decision. Here are some essential factors to keep in mind:
Â
BUDGET CONSTRAINTS
Be realistic about your budget when selecting a bowling ball. Set a clear range for how much you are willing to invest, considering not only the cost of the ball itself but also potential additional expenses such as drilling and custom fittings. Keep in mind that a higher budget may provide access to advanced technology and materials, potentially impacting your game.
Â
LONG-TERM BOWLING GOALS
Consider your long-term goals when choosing a bowling ball. Are you looking to improve your game, compete at a higher level, or simply enjoy recreational bowling? Understanding your aspirations will help guide your decision, ensuring that the chosen ball aligns with your skill development and future achievements.
Â
INVESTMENT VS. PERFORMANCE
Evaluate the balance between your budget and the potential impact on your performance and skill development. While investing in a higher-quality ball may come with a higher price tag, it can also offer enhanced features and durability, potentially contributing to long-term performance improvements. Balancing investment with the potential return in terms of skill advancement is crucial when making a decision.
Â
CONCLUSION
Choosing the right bowling ball is crucial for enhancing your performance and enjoyment on the lanes. By understanding your bowling style, the lane conditions, and the core and coverstock options available, you can make an informed decision that complements your game. Remember to try out different balls to find the perfect fit for your playing style. Investing time in selecting the right bowling ball will undoubtedly contribute to your success and satisfaction in the game. So, go ahead, apply your newfound knowledge, and roll that perfect strike!
Thanks for the article. It helped me figure out a few things but left me unsure on others. I am a 70 year old Stroker comfortable with a 15 pound ball for about a six game stretch. This article helped me determine I need a ball with a solid coverstock and a symmetrical weight block. I got lost in trying to understand how top weight is figured in. Is that the part where I seek professional advice?
I am a low rev bowler. Was going to buy the widow 2.0 hybrid but now am wondering if the new widow 3.0 will be a better choice? Mainly shoot recreation and league.
What about bowlers 70 years or older with some health issues that have lost ball speed but still have alot of hand in the ball. With conditions now the are almost having to stand in front of the ball return on throw at the 10 board range marker.
I’m a 70 yr old male, more of a striker, I throw over the 4-5 board, medium speed, medium speed Rev and I like the description of the Black Widow 3.0, Hammer. What do you think… Darrell
